We are currently developing a cycle training programme after 11 of our volunteers and staff undertook training to become qualified Bikeability instructors. This training will be aimed at people learning to cycle, as well as those who want to gain more confidence on the road.
During July, August and October 2025 we delivered six pilot cycle training sessions for adults. This was to test out our ability to
deliver such a programme and to gauge the level of interest, with a view to delivering further sessions in 2026.
Sessions were free to attend and supported with funding from Cycling UK as part of the annual Big Bike Revival programme. Each session provided training for people at any level. At the start of each session we divided participants into three groups – one working on pedalling, another that stayed in the park practicing turns and signalling, and a group that went onto the road. We saw brilliant progress with participants and received lots of very encouraging feedback.
Here is some feedback from participants:
● “Lots of fun, feel so much more confident now!”
● “I had only pedalled short stretches before and today I could go long stretches! This was brilliant.
This was such a comfortable environment to learn in. Thank you!”
● “So useful to be with others who feel the same way as me.”
● “I did not have confidence as I had not cycled for >30 years. After a few minutes I became
confident. The tutors were brilliant and very encouraging.”
● “Amazing. First time I was able to pedal – overcoming years of fear & shame about not being able
to ride a bike. I really appreciate these sessions & the patience of the teachers. Really helped
break down learning and build my confidence.”
● “My confidence is so much better and I’m really enjoying cycling again.”
● “Great progress I learnt how to signal”
● “These sessions have been fabulous. I went from barely being able to pedal to cycling long
distances confidently and beginning to practice road readiness. Amazing!”
